The Newa Chen is situated at 150 m distance from the Durbar Square, in the heart of the ancient city. The XVII century house has been renovated in 2006 with care and passion by local craftsmen with extensive use and reuse of local materials, in the framework of a UNESCO project for heritage preservation. In fact, UNESCO identified the Newa Chen as a gem among the houses of Patan for its well preserved original structure and particular beauty. The Newa Chen maintains the dimensions, low ceiling, wood carving and cosy characters of an authentic traditional Newar house. The visitor can experience the genuine spirit of the house being alive, by observing the daily rituals and occasionally greater celebrations in the inner courtyard. A more recent building, refurbished respecting the principles of the Newar tradition and using local materials and handicraft, closes the inner courtyard: the rooms of this house benefit of higher ceilings and beds, and a roof terrace with a great view on the historical building and garden. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Shrestha family owning the compound, the Guest House is run as a social enterprise with the goal of generating the financial means to support a children home in the neighborhood of Bhaktapur.
Our rooms offers twin beds, double bed or double bed "high": all have a private bathroom, a cupboard with safe-lock and a sitting area in the traditional Newar style. Most of them have the view on the beautiful inner courtyard and small garden. Since the house is about 400 years old, kindly note that the room ceiling is only 1.8 meter high in the twin and double rooms. In the rooms called "high" the ceiling and the beds are higher and the bathrooms are totally renovated in 2023.
After paying fair salaries to the staff, the entire benefit is donated to support the Children Home of the NGO Kam For Sud. The children home is situated in the Kathmandu valley and offers love, protection and education to about 60 orphan or abandoned children living in 3 family houses, each house being managed by a couple of nepalese parents. One hectare of organic farmland surrounds the three homes for the self sustainment of the structure.
